Thousand Hills State Park has four interpretive programs on the calendar this month, all free and open to the public. A Nature Painting Class focused on a winter nature scene runs Friday, Oct. 9, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the park office, with supplies provided and reservations encouraged by calling ahead; a guided Petroglyph Tour of the park’s ancient rock carvings follows Saturday, Oct. 10, at 10 a.m. at the Petroglyph Shelter, with no registration needed.
A Fungal Foray led by Truman State University mycology researcher Bob Johnson starts Sunday, Oct. 11, at 9 a.m. in the day-use area parking lot across from Red Bud Trail, where participants are asked to bring a basket and dress for the woods. A program on snakes, “Something About a Snake,” follows Saturday, Oct. 17, at 10:30 a.m. at the amphitheater in Campground 1. The park’s previously announced Dark Sky Program is still set for Friday, Oct. 23.
