City of Kirksville celebrates Missouri Good Neighbor Week
Kirksville Mayor Zac Burden signed a proclamation recognizing Missouri Good Neighbor Week, which runs from September 28 to October 4.
Studies reveal that most Americans do not know the names of their neighbors and have little meaningful interaction with them, alongside rising trends of loneliness and social isolation. Nearby friendships can increase happiness, deepen community pride, improve mental health, reduce crime and foster inclusive communities where everyone belongs.
So, if you don’t know your neighbors, take this as an opportunity to forge new friendships. Or, help strengthen bonds you’ve already made. Something as simple as a smile or a wave can go a long way.
If you have an exemplary neighbor you’d like to highlight, you can share that with the Missouri Good Neighbor Week organization at Missourigoodneighborweek.com.

City of Kirksville gives CAPNEMO $36,500 toward childcare expansion
The City of Kirksville presented Community Action Partnership of Northeast Missouri (CAPNEMO) with a $36,500 check at Monday’s city council meeting to help fund an expansion of local childcare services.
CAPNEMO plans to combine the city’s contribution with a grant from the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education to renovate a former preschool building it owns on Locust Street, creating additional infant and toddler daycare slots. The city council voted last year to set aside the funds in its 2026 budget; the money comes from Kirksville’s marijuana sales tax, half of which is directed toward community development.
Councilmembers Kabir Bansal, Cindy Mayberry, Zac Burden and John Gardner presented the check to CAPNEMO Executive Director Traci Lawrence and Head Start Director Jenn Vaughn.
