The Kirksville Arts Association’s original arts center building was destroyed in a December 2016 fire; the cause was never determined. The association rebuilt one block south, at Franklin and Jefferson, naming the new building the Sue Ross Arts Center after Sue Ross, a longtime Arts Association board member and public school teacher who died about six weeks before the fire. A mosaic mural from the original building — Ross’s idea — was salvaged and restored for display in the new center.
The center’s Gaber Gallery mounts month-long exhibitions of local, regional, and traveling artists throughout the year, supported by volunteers from the Friends of the Arts group. The Arts Association also runs classes and workshops (recent examples include plein air painting, crochet, and barn quilt making), and organizes the Red Barn Arts & Crafts Festival each fall in downtown Kirksville.
