Road construction report: what’s active in Adair County and around Kirksville, Sept. 28

A look at what’s currently active or scheduled on Adair County roads and in the seven counties bordering it, plus City of Kirksville street work, as of Monday, Sept. 28, 2026. This roundup draws on the Missouri Department of Transportation’s (MoDOT) 2026 Northeast District Construction Guide, MoDOT’s weekly roadwork update for the week of Sept. 28, and the City of Kirksville’s public works pages. It supplements, and does not replace, the Wire’s Roads Report directory of live sources.

Conditions and schedules can change on short notice, especially with weather. Always confirm current closures on MoDOT’s live Traveler Information Map before you drive.
Adair County
MoDOT’s weekly update: no work scheduled this week
MoDOT’s roadwork report for the week of Sept. 28 lists no highway maintenance or construction scheduled in Adair County. That weekly listing covers new short-term lane closures and maintenance, not longer multi-week projects already announced separately — including the Route H/Route P resurfacing below, whose Sept. 29 start date comes from MoDOT’s Sept. 17 announcement and had not been independently reconfirmed this week.
Route H resurfacing — was set to start Tuesday, Sept. 29
Contractor crews were expected to begin as early as Sept. 29 resurfacing Route H from LaHarpe Street to Missouri Route 11 in Kirksville. Traffic will be reduced to one lane with a 10-foot width restriction while crews are actively working, with flaggers and a pilot car guiding traffic through the work zone. Expect significant delays once underway.
Route P resurfacing — follows Route H
Once Route H work wraps up, crews will move to two Route P segments: from 0.3 miles east of U.S. 63 to Bass Way, and from Business Route 63/Baltimore Street to U.S. 63. The same one-lane, 10-foot-width restrictions and flagger/pilot-car traffic control will apply.
Route 149 seal coat — Putnam County line to Novinger
Seal coat work on Route 149 between the Putnam County line and Route 6 near Novinger began as early as Aug. 25 as part of a multi-county phase with Macon, Putnam and Randolph counties. MoDOT projected completion “by early fall,” so this project should be wrapping up or finished.
ADA sidewalk projects — Kirksville & Novinger
MoDOT’s 2026 guide lists three standing ADA sidewalk projects in the county with no specific closure dates announced yet: Business Route 63 (East Illinois Street to East Patterson Street in Kirksville), Route 149 (Tenth Street to Second Street in Novinger) and Route O (Oakland Avenue to Corrigan Street in Novinger).
Bordering counties: Schuyler, Scotland, Knox, Macon, Linn, Sullivan & Putnam
Putnam County — bridge closures & resurfacing
Route 129 remains closed at North Blackbird Creek for pavement repairs through Oct. 8, and Route M will close at Medicine Creek for pavement repairs Sept. 28 through Oct. 15 — both part of MoDOT’s Northwest Bridge Bundle program (design-build team: Capital-Horner & Shifrin). A resurfacing project on Route 5, from U.S. Route 136 east of Unionville to Route 6 north of Milan in Sullivan County, continues through the end of September (contractor: Emery Sapp & Sons). Resurfacing and culvert work also continues on U.S. Route 136 from Route C in Mercer County to Route N near Livonia, with a 12-foot width restriction, through October (contractor: Magruder Paving).
Sullivan County — bridge closures, resurfacing & scrub seal
Route 129 is closed at the North Spring Creek Bridge and Route N is closed at the Yellow Creek Bridge, both through October, for bridge replacement under the Northwest Bridge Bundle program. Routes E, W and PP will see resurfacing work Sept. 28-30 (contractor: W.L. Miller Company). A scrub seal project on Routes M, 139 and O continues through October across Sullivan and Linn counties (contractor: Above and Below Contracting).
Linn County — scrub seal, shared with Sullivan
Linn County’s share of the scrub seal project on Routes M, 139 and O continues through October alongside Sullivan County (contractor: Above and Below Contracting). No other MoDOT work was listed for Linn County this week.
Macon County — Route 36 shoulder work, Oct. 5-9
Westbound U.S. Route 36 will be reduced to one lane for shoulder work from Long Branch Lake Road to Route C, 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily, Oct. 5-9. Macon County’s U.S. 63/36 interchange project, reported complete after a Sept. 3 ribbon-cutting, remains otherwise the most recent Macon County news.
Schuyler, Scotland & Knox counties — no new items this week
MoDOT’s weekly update lists no work in Schuyler, Scotland or Knox counties this week. Separately, four Schuyler County resurfacing projects and Scotland County’s shared Route D project remain on track for their Nov. 1 deadline under the Governor’s Rural Roads Program, and Knox County’s Route 15 seal coat remains listed in MoDOT’s 2026 Northeast District Construction Guide.
City of Kirksville public works
2026 Annual Street Program
The city’s ongoing 2026 paving season covers street reconstruction, concrete repairs, surface sealing, and asphalt mill-and-overlay work on numerous residential and collector streets citywide, shown on the city’s published program map. The city has not posted new week-by-week closure dates for individual segments this week; residents with a specific street in mind should check the map or contact Street Maintenance directly.
