A roundup of one-time programs at the Adair County Public Library this October, drawn from the library’s own events calendar and October newsletter. For hours, services, and its recurring monthly programs, see our library guide.

Tuesday, October 6, 6-8pm — a talk from author Katy Schamberger about her book Oldest Kansas City: A Guide to Historic Treasures, open to anyone renewing their library membership or joining as a Friend of the Adair County Public Library. Cookies served afterward.
Two library programs tie into the renewed interest in Homer’s Odyssey following this summer’s blockbuster film adaptation. The Odyssey for Kids — Saturday, October 10, 10:30-11:30am, all ages — introduces children to Greek mythology with Amy Norgard and Josh Nudell. Homer’s Odyssey in Modern Media — Thursday, October 15, 6-7pm, 16+ — is a discussion of the film and other modern retellings with the same two presenters. Both are sponsored by Truman State University’s School of Arts and Humanities.
Movie Night: Gremlins — Friday, October 16, 6pm — a screening of the PG-rated Halloween classic.
Truck or Treat — Saturday, October 17, 10am-12pm, all ages — vehicles from around the community, ice cream from Frosted Flamingo, games, and music.
Exploring Birds and Bird Watching — Saturday, October 24, 10-11am, all ages — a bird program presented with Thousand Hills State Park.
Reptile Meet and Greet — Saturday, October 24, 2-3pm, all ages — animals from the Truman State University Herpetarium.
Halloween Town — Saturday, October 31, 6-8pm, all ages — the library’s October newsletter confirms this is now a joint event with Kirksville Parks and Recreation and other local businesses, held at the Kirksville Square, billed as a “massive, family-friendly trick-or-treating experience.”
Introduction to Mahjong (16+) is a new recurring program, meeting three times this October: the 5th (1-3pm), the 19th (1-3pm), and the 28th (5:30-6:30pm).
Amigurumi — Thursday, October 22, 4pm, all ages — a craft session; the library says sign-up and certain skills are required, so call ahead for details.
